Saturday

Ian McEwan wrote a more interesting novel with the same title, but all the same, I had a rather full day.

I woke up early and went for a run in the park; 28 minutes, which is a little longer than usual (under 35 minutes).

I got in touch with a friend about taking a trip together. It's short notice, so she may not be able to join me, but with any luck the two of us will be traipsing around Costa Rica in a couple of weeks. Worst case, I'll be on my own.

After that I went out. It's such a gorgeous day, I just wanted to walk and shop and sunbathe. I didn't buy much, but I did spend a few hours outside, including two in the park, trying to understand graduate-level statistics while getting a start on my tan. I'm not sure how well that worked.

I came home, ate, tidied up the apartment (it was a mess!) and started actually studying, after talking to a friend on the phone for an hour.

I was really hoping to go out tonight, but studying took precedence. I figure I'm on vacation in two weeks anyway, and I've got all summer to head down to LES and listen to live music.

Boys

I've still got some mojo, though as always, I can hook them but I can't seem to reel them in.

Met a boy at a Neko Case concert. We hit it off, exchanged information, I wrote him two days later . . .no word.

Met another boy on the train the other day. from what I gather, some sort of professional acquiring a taste for the boho life - ironic, as I head in the opposite direction. To exchange digits, he texted me, a first. I feel like I've been formally inaugurated into the twenty-first century, a former early adopter now lagging behind the pack.

Spendthrift

It's difficult not to feel guilty, or at least to worry that I'm setting myself up for disaster. In these economic times, nothing is to be taken for granted, and spending money is regarded with both jealousy and contempt.

Things I've bought myself that, strictly speaking, are not needed in this life: a life jacket, safety lights for kayaking, a bicycle, helmet, and U-lock, and a ticket to see a musician I like. Additionally, I fronted money for dinner with a friend of mine from college, a sumptuous feast with cocktails, proper courses, and a bottle of wine.

Seriously though, it's all been worthwhile. I have little free time, and when I do have free time, these are the things I like to do: ride my bike, kayak on the river, and enjoy the company of my friends.
