Dn and I planned to go one a short evening paddle with a couple other people, but no one else showed up. We got special dispensation to go out as a pair instead of in a group. We decided to paddle north to Fairway (about 125th street). We made such great time we decided to see how far we could go.
We ended up going to the George Washington Bridge.
By the time we got there, it was night. We broke out our lights and cruised on the way back. Having kept on the Manhattan side the whole time, we had a quiet ride back most of the way, past parks and residential neighborhoods, and he highway. At one point, a train roared past, and I could feel the vibration through the river in my boat.
Altogether, we took about 3 hours round trip, pretty good time considering the distance. We had the tide with us most of the way. This was only my third night paddle, and the first time I wasn't in a large group. I felt prepared; nothing bad happened, but something had happened, I would have been confident I could handle it.
I plan to go on more trips, but it was a good trip to go out on on.
