Irene

So today we are expecting Hurricane Irene to hit NYC. Technically tomorrow, Sunday between 2 AM and 8 AM, but effectively today, as we prepare for the coming storm.

As part of my volunteer work with the Downtown Boathouse, I rode my bike down there to help move bats around. We are certain to have at least a little flooding of the boathouse, and if it is severe enough then the park authority will open the main doors to allow the water to flow through the building. Because of this, we moved boats off the lower racks, and moved other stuff up off the floor. It's like a big, communal garage, and like everyone in the region, we had to prepare.

For myself, I was a little uncertain. With all the warnings and advisories, I felt like I already have what I need: flashlights, food, water. I live in Washington Heights, so I'm not concerned with flooding from storm surge. But am I really prepared?

I think so.
