Fourth

A really lovely, unplanned Fourth of July holiday. I was out late with a friend the night before for dinner, and got to bed at midnight. I still managed to get up at 6:15, get dressed and grab my gear to bike to the boathouse - that's East Harlem, 135th street, down to 56th and the Hudson, folks - for a morning trip.

I took an Orange fiberglass boat, not sure of the model. It was a big boat, not one I would gravitate towards again. we went up a few blocks, then crossed the river, then up to the Japanese supermarket across the river from about 116th street. There was some wind, but it wasn't really bad until on the way back, as we crossed. We were weathercocking like crazy - I would got forward, and a wave would push me thirty degrees to the left. I would correct, and get pushed back again. I hadn't experienced those kinds of conditions before.

As it turned out, my club was allowed to picnic in the boathouse and watch the fireworks, which started off straight ahead of us in the river, while the hoi polloi were penned in on the park and the highway. I came hoe and changed, and brought goodies back, and spent the entire afternoon and night there. I hadn't planned on seeing the fireworks, but it was nice to be so close, and with so many mates.

I rode my bike back - at night, with lights through parts of Harlem I usually avoid. I came away without incident, and was at home around 11.
