I wrote the following in response to a Ron Paul supporter on an online forum.
Paul's positions on the Fed and on the gold standard are badly misguided.
The Fed is not answerable to the government in order to prevent it being politicized. It is not answerable to corporate interests either. Having a strong central bank to coordinate economic policy is vital. Without it, you get the Eurozone at best, and South America at worst.
Gold is a great store of value but an outdated basis of currency. Among other problems, imagine if Australia or Angola began printing perfectly valid US dollars. To Paul's points about inflation, have you seen the price of gold over the last ten years? Imagine inflation tracked that rate. You'd be paying $20 for a Snickers bar.
BTW, not all of the troops need to come home. We have good reasons to have a military presence overseas.
Dr. Ron Paul is the candidate for people who don't like adult supervision. If that's who you want for president, by all means vote for him.

148 Years Later
From the NY Times, an interesting, if predictable, coincidence:
"On Nov. 6, 1860, former Illinois congressman Abraham Lincoln defeated three other candidates for the U.S. presidency"
"On Nov. 6, 1860, former Illinois congressman Abraham Lincoln defeated three other candidates for the U.S. presidency"
