Julie McCoy Goes to DUMBO

This morning I went to DUMBO - that's Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass for you non-New Yorkers. I'm scheduled to take a test at a testing center tehre next Saturday, and I wanted to make sure that I could find my way there.

DUMBO is nice. I'd heard, but never been. What started as an artist's colony about six or seven years ago (earlier? I don't know) has turned into a nice little gentrified, yupper-middle class neighborhood. There's a new construction apartment building, some new mall-ish stores (West Elm, Zoe, and of course Starbucks) and it's all within spitting distance of the water's edge along the East River. It's right across from downtown Manhattan and even closer than the views from across the Hudson.

I kinda wish I could live there, but I'm also kinda creeped out that what was once a semi-industrial, partially abandoned neighborhood has so quickly become a destination neighborhood. For those UConn grads who came to the city too late to get their entry-level apartment in Manhattan, DUMBO's not a bad compromise. You could live and work with only a ten minute commute. All you'd give up would be an area code, which, let's face it, they're not handing out 212s anymore anyway.
